BSSP launches the Sports Leadership Academy

This is a new project for the partnership and forms part of the national Sports Leadership and Volunteering programme for the development and support of young sports leaders as part of the build up to the 2012 London Olympics.

As a partnership we are extremely proud of the active role we have played in the development of young sports leaders across our primary and secondary schools over the last 4 years. Through the mechanisms of the partnership, schools have the opportunity to access primary leadership qualifications, secondary leadership qualifications and a whole host of practical based leadership experiences.

Over the last year alone we have trained over 200 young sports leaders from primary schools and involved over 500 young sports leaders from secondary schools in practical leadership experiences at partnership events and festivals.

Across all our schools there are a large number of young people, who have regularly given up their time as a volunteer to support the delivery of school sport opportunities across the partnership. Whether this be as an event official, an assistant coach or a team leader, we truly have an immense number of young people who are willing to help others.

We are therefore launching Sports Leadership Academy this academic year. The Academy is an opportunity for 36 young people to join a project that is dedicated to supporting them as young sports leaders, providing them with free training, free access to courses and regular mentoring sessions. We hope that by meeting as a group at least 5 times a year, we can build a strong team, who will benefit from each others experiences and grow as individual, with the potential to become 2012 Olympic Sports Leaders.

All students wishing to be part of the academy must apply for a place by completing the application form. There are a maximum of 6 places available to each school. Those selected students will be invite to the first academy  on Friday 6th November 2009 at Watton Sport Centre here they will not only learn more about the project but also hear from a high profile inspiring sports person.

On completion of all the necessary forms, Head teachers of respective schools will be informed of selected pupils and these pupils will be released from school to attend a team building day at Watton Sports Centre, a First Aid Course and a Sports Qualifications day during term time later on in the year.

All successful pupils will also receive a Leadership Academy T shirt.
