The festival got underway with a group warm up run by Kerry Abrey Gymnastics coach and development officer and demonstrated by Brecky Bear much to the amusement of the children and staff.
Once everyone was suitably warmed up the teams took part in a gymnastics coaching session delivered by Kerry Abrey and with the help of sports leaders from Rosemary Musker high school. This enabled the students to practice their floor routines and perfect their vaulting technique before the competition started. The sports leaders acted as demonstrators for all the events and also provided helpful advice and teaching points for all the activities.
After the gymnastics workshop had been completed we got the competition started with the teams rotating around the three elements throughout the afternoon. The pupils competed individually at all three activities with the top 5 scores were added together to create the team score, we had three judges on site who marked the events out of ten with marks deducted for bent knees, flat feet etc.
Even though neither school has competed at gymnastics before the team scores were very high and incredibly tight, this resulted in a nail-biting suspense when the medal presentation took place. Over all there were only 2 points separating first and second place and 4 tenths of a point separating third and fourth position.
But in first place and going on to represent the Thetford cluster at the partnership final in Attleborough was Queensway team 1...well done!
I have to say a massive thank you to all the sports leaders for their hard work and the judges and coaches who made the event run so smoothly.
We will defiantly look to build on the success and enthusiasm of this festival and develop gymnastics even further across the town.
