Bikeability wheels into Thetford Academy!

Year 7 students from the Thetford Academy had the opportunity to undertake the Bikeability Level 1 and 2 courses this week. On the 4th April, 11 students were put through their paces by the instructors and were taught basic bike maintenance before embarking on a series of drills designed to test their understanding and competence on two wheels.

On successful completion of the play ground based tasks the students were provided with high visibility jackets and escorted off the school site to put what they had learnt into action on the local roads.

By 3.30pm the group returned smiling from ear to ear having been told they had passed Level 1 with flying colours!

With weary bodies and aching legs the students were dismissed for some much earned rest and told to report back right an early the following day to tackle the Level 2 course.

All the students showed their enthusiasm for the course by arriving early to be registered already wearing their cycle helmets and standing on the ‘safe side’ of their bikes.

Day two involved more ‘sneaking’ which is a safe way of moving in convoy along the roads and a series of practical drills and assessments designed to challenge them even further. The students really enjoyed the day which took place solely on the roads and provided them with a real insight into how to move about the busy roads of Thetford safely.

At 3pm the group returned to go through the Highway Code and de-brief what they had learnt and as a reward for them all being so well behaved and attentive the students were given the opportunity to try their hand at various ‘bike sport’ activities ranging from the slow race to group riding (see picture).

I'm pleased to say that all eleven of the students passed the Level 2 which is fantastic and even better still the majority has said they will ask their parents if they can cycle to school.
