Breckland students in 2012 Olympics workforce

Last year students from across the Partnership attended the Breckland Leadership Academy where they undertook specific training relating to volunteering and leadership both in a school and community setting.

Over the summer term three of the academy leaders were selected by the Partnership after showing great leadership qualities and the initiative to put what they had learnt in to practice, by reaching out into their local communities and volunteering for local clubs. These students have been entered into the Youth Sports Trust Olympic Ambassadors program and will now be part of the volunteer workforce for the Olympic Games 2012.

The following students were selected:

Stephen Hardy, Platinum Ambassador from Wymondham College

Elliot Smith, Gold Ambassador from Thetford Academy North Site

James Shaw, Gold Ambassador from Wayland Community High School

On Thursday 16th September 2010 the selected students were invited down to the Olympic Sports Ambassadors Conference at Twickenham.  This is a national event which sees all of the top leaders from the rest of the country coming together to share experiences and discuss ideas in preparation for the Olympic Games in 2012.

On the day the students were provided with Adidas Sports Kit and were separated into Gold and Platinum groups to find out what was expected of them now that they are part of the Olympic volunteer workforce. Throughout the event, current Olympic athletes were also on hand to discuss what it is like to be part of the Games and how important a role volunteers play in making the Games such a success.

The day was a real eye opener for the Young Leaders as they suddenly realised what a tremendous achievement it has been to be selected for this program. It was fantastic to see students so inspired and talking with a real passion about how they plan to implement their new ideas into their cluster schools.

As a follow up to the conference the Sports Ambassadors will now be tasked with planning and delivering a workshop to two students from every High School in the Partnership; these students will be known as Adistars. The Adistars will then form the workforce for the Sports Ambassadors to use to help spread the message of the Olympic values across their cluster schools.

After a very long journey of six trains and four tubes, the Leaders all looked shattered but thoroughly agreed that even though they had been up since 5am the conference was more than worth it!
