Rowing Regatta Races Reach New Heights!

On Wednesday 9th December, Norfolk’s 8 School Sports Partnerships came together for the Year 7 & 8, Year 12 & 13 and Special Schools County Indoor Rowing Regatta Finals at UEA.

Run in partnership between Norfolk County Council’s Competition Team and British Rowing over 100 children raced on 'ergos' aka indoor rowing machines against British Rowing Gold Medal Targets. Linked up to a virtual lake projected onto the wall, the first competition got underway amidst a series of cheering, shouting and encouragement from competitors and spectators alike.

With the Year 7 Boys on first,  any pre race nerves were soon forgotten as the site of the partnership boats on the virtual lake lay waiting… ‘Ready, Attention, Row’ signalled the start of the race.

Senior Competition Manager, Roger Sweet was on fine form as race commentator for the day as Norwich East came away with the trophy for Year 7 & 8 winners.  The Breckland School Sports Partnership was represented by Wymondham College, Rosemary Musker High School and Wayland Community High School with Years 7 & 8 finishing 5th and Years 12 & 13 finishing 2nd!

With Norwich Rowing Club on hand to provide expertise on rowing technique throughout the day, an enjoyable day was spent by all on the virtual lake.

Stuart Brunton-Douglas, Competition Manager highlighted,

"It was great to have 4 special schools take part today. Congratulations must go to Fredrick Nicholson School who won the Special Schools Competition, followed by Sidestrand Hall, the Claire School and John Grant."

“Today just goes to show the rewards and enjoyment, children of all abilities can gain and achieve from competing in sport. School Sport competition is an excellent way for schools to achieve the ‘Every Child Matters’ outcomes and ensure children stay healthy, enjoy and achieve.’’

The day was concluded with the Year 12 & Year 13 competition where partnerships were vying for the Mike Arnold Trophy. Presented by Ian Arnold, son of Mike, congratulations go to Norwich East who just pipped Breckland and East Norfolk as the overall winners.
