Team Building Leads The Way

On November 6th, Watton Sports Centre played host for the launch of the Breckland Leadership Academy. The event was the first of a series of workshops for the young sports leaders who had successfully been selected for the academy from the Partnerships 6 high schools.

The academy has 34 keen leaders aged from 14-16 years who are already fully active in either community or school volunteering and leading within sport.

The main purpose of the academy is therefore to highlight their success and provide them with leadership related workshops to enable them to develop their skills further and to encourage them to log their hours on the step into sport website.

The day was run by a team building company called Pathfinders. They provided the leaders with a series of practical challenges in the morning which focused on the key components of leadership - communication, trust, team work and problem solving.

We were very lucky to have a sports star with us for the whole day as Boxer John Thaxton who is now working as part of the Pathfinders team, gave the leaders an insight into how important working as a team is for achieving your goals.

The afternoon was inspired by popular TV programme 'Dragons Den' and involved the students being given the brief of owning Watton Sports Centre and spending 45 minutes creating ideas on how to make it more profitable and accommodating to the community. Once they had finalised their presentation they had to sell their concept to the 'Dragons' to see if they could get the them to invest their hard earned money into their project. The teams came up with some great ideas from building a swimming pool to making the site into a specialist sports complex for hockey to tie in with the Olympics.

The final task was 'Giant Catapults', which was a whole team challenge to emphasise that the students were no longer 6 seperate high schools but are now part of one Breckland Team. This proved to be a great success with the teams smashing the target set by the Pathfinders team.

Overall the day was a great success and far exceeded its original goal of breaking down communication barriers to form one cohesive team.

The Leadership Academy meets on the 8th December 2009 at Watton Sports Centre for Emergency Procedures and Planning; an event workshop, which will be delivered by Jon Eaton, Competition Manager.
