Thetford Cluster Tag Rugby

On Friday 6th March Thetford Rugby club was host to the Year 5 and 6 Tag rugby festival for the Thetford Cluster schools.

All the schools had benefited from specific coaching from Marie Reidie (Rosemary Musker SSCo and event organiser) in the weeks leading up to the event with many children playing the game for the very first time.

Penny Chapman (RFU coach and development officer) and Jon Eaton (Norfolk Competition manager) were on hand to support the event which was the first of its kind in Thetford.

The teams arrived at the rugby club kitted out in team strips fully charged up ready for a fun day of rugby in the warm sunshine.

Sports leaders from Rosemary Musker High School were allocated a team each and acted as team coaches on the pitch and ran the touch for the games. They showed fantastic team spirit and motivated the players for the duration of the day. I also had additional help from Thomas Paine 6th Form students who worked alongside Penny Chapman to complete their Rugby CSLA course, they will now be able to assist with the development of rugby in the Thetford schools..well done boys!!

The teams battled it out in the heats for a place in the final with most matches being decided by a single try, it made for a nail biting wait for the play offs to be called out!!

Norwich Rd and Queensway juniors made it through to the final for first place, with some outstanding rugby from both teams being played the ball moved freely among the players. By full time the scores were level, the teams had no choice but to battle on for the golden try. With an almighty cheer a member of the Norwich Rd team grounded the ball for the winning try securing their school a place in the county final on the 30th March!!

The day was a great success with all teams putting in 110% at every game, everybody showed great sportsmanship and enthusiasm even when they were not winning. It was so nice to see both boys, girls, teachers and parents watching clapping and cheering the teams on!!

I would just like to say a big thank you to all those who helped me make the day run so smoothly and to Thetford Rugby club for providing the venue.

I would like to think that by providing the children with the opportunity to take part in such a fun and exciting festival they may join Thetford  Rugby club's Youth section which train at the club on a Sunday 10.30am that way we can really look to develop rugby across Thetford on every level.
